OCIMF SIRE 2020 Rollout Begins

Enhanced Safety and Compliance for Maritime Industry

Phase 1 of OCIMF's SIRE 2020 rollout is now underway, introducing significant changes to ship inspection and reporting standards.

The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) has announced the commencement of phase 1 of its SIRE 2020 rollout. SIRE, or Ship Inspection Report, is a comprehensive inspection program that assesses the safety and compliance of marine vessels.

The updated SIRE 2020 standards aim to enhance safety and reduce the risk of marine pollution. Phase 1 will focus on the inspection of cargo vessels with a gross tonnage of 15,000 or more, targeting those that are most likely to be involved in oil transportation.

Key changes in SIRE 2020 include:

  • Expanded scope: SIRE 2020 covers a wider range of vessel types, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and offshore supply vessels.
  • Increased frequency: Inspections will now be conducted every 5 years for tankers and every 10 years for gas carriers, with the option for extensions.
  • Data sharing: SIRE inspection data will be shared with a broader group of stakeholders, including cargo owners and charterers.

The OCIMF says that SIRE 2020 "will help ensure that the highest standards of safety and environmental protection are maintained in the maritime industry."
