Seldinger Technique: Medical Breakthrough for Puncturing Blood Vessels

History and Discovery

The Seldinger Technique, named after Dr. Sven Ivar Seldinger, a Swedish radiologist, revolutionised medical procedures for puncturing blood vessels. Introduced in the 1950s, it became widely used across various medical fields.

Breakthrough in Vascular Access Device Insertion

The Seldinger Technique transformed vascular access device (VAD) insertion techniques. It streamlined the process by using a small-bore needle to puncture a vessel, followed by the insertion of a guidewire and a larger catheter over the wire. Compared to the previous open-surgical approach, this technique drastically reduced complications and improved patient comfort.

The Seldinger Technique continues to be the primary method for vascular access in various medical procedures, ranging from diagnostic imaging to catheterizations and stent placements.
