Club legend battling illness, says club statement

Hansen, 68, played over 600 games for Liverpool and won 28 caps for Scotland

Alan Hansen, the former Liverpool and Scotland centre-back, is seriously ill in hospital. The 68-year-old, who won 28 caps for his country, played over 600 games for Liverpool during a glittering career which saw him win eight league titles and three European Cups. Hansen, who was born in Edinburgh, started his career with Liverpool as a youth player in 1970 and went on to make his first-team debut in 1972. He was a key member of the Liverpool side which dominated English football in the 1970s and 1980s, winning eight league titles, three European Cups and two FA Cups. After retiring from playing in 1991, Hansen became a successful television pundit, working for the BBC and ITV. He is known for his forthright views and his incisive analysis of the game. Hansen's illness has been met with shock and sadness by the football world. Liverpool have released a statement saying that they are "deeply concerned" about his condition. "The club's thoughts are with Alan and his family at this difficult time," the statement said. "Alan is a true Liverpool legend and we wish him all the best in his recovery." Hansen's former Liverpool team-mate, Kenny Dalglish, said: "Alan is a great friend and a great servant to Liverpool Football Club. "I'm sure everyone will be joining me in sending him our best wishes and hoping for a speedy recovery." Former Scotland manager, Gordon Strachan, said: "Alan is a good friend and a great ambassador for Scottish football. "He's a really intelligent guy and I'm sure he'll be able to fight through this." Hansen's illness is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time.
