Euro 2024: Netherlands Book Place in Quarterfinals with 2-0 Win Over Austria
Austria's Losing Streak Against the Netherlands Continues
Van de Beek and Malen Goals Seal Victory for the Dutch
The Netherlands continued their dominance over Austria in international competition, extending their winning streak to seven matches with a 2-0 victory in their final Group D game at Euro 2024. Donny van de Beek and Donyell Malen scored the goals that secured the victory for the Dutch, who have now progressed to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Austria, who had lost their first two matches of the tournament, were hoping to salvage some pride and qualify for the knockout stages, but they were outclassed by a superior Netherlands team. The Dutch controlled possession throughout the match and created several chances to score, while Austria struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities.
Van de Beek opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 25th minute, firing home a low shot from the edge of the area. Malen doubled their lead just before halftime, tapping home a cross from Steven Berghuis. Austria pressed for a goal in the second half, but they were unable to break down the well-organized Dutch defense.
The victory means that the Netherlands have finished top of Group D with seven points, while Austria finish bottom with no points. The Dutch will now face the runners-up from Group E in the quarterfinals, while Austria will return home empty-handed.
