Messi Scores 109th International Goal in Argentina Victory
Defending champions Argentina kicked off their Copa América campaign with a 2-0 victory over Canada on Thursday. Lionel Messi scored his 109th international goal, giving Argentina the lead in the first half. Lautaro Martínez added a second goal in the second half to seal the win.
The match was played in front of a sell-out crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Argentina dominated the match from the start, creating several chances to score. Messi opened the scoring in the 35th minute, with a trademark left-footed shot from outside the box.
Martínez added to Argentina's lead in the 58th minute, with a header from a cross by Ángel Di María. Canada had a few chances to get back into the game, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
The win gives Argentina a strong start to their Copa América campaign. They will face Uruguay in their next match on Monday.
