Tim Walz: From Football Coach to Minnesota Governor
Humble Beginnings and Military Service
Timothy James Walz (born April 6, 1964) is an American politician, former schoolteacher, and retired U.S. Army National Guard officer.
Walz was born in Red Wing, Minnesota, and raised on a cattle ranch.
He graduated from Mankato State University with a degree in social studies education. After graduation, Walz worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach.
Political Career
In 2006, Walz was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Minnesota's 1st Congressional District.
He served in the House for 12 years, and during that time he was a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Veterans' Affairs Committee.
Governor of Minnesota
In 2018, Walz was elected Governor of Minnesota. He defeated incumbent Republican Governor Mark Dayton.
Walz is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), an affiliate of the Democratic Party.
He is the 41st Governor of Minnesota and the first DFLer to hold the office since Mark Dayton.
Personal Life
Walz is married to Gwen Walz. They have three children.
Walz is a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard and has served in Iraq.
He is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.
